Pineapple diseases and control measures

Heart rot or stem rot: C.O. Phytophthora parasitica: This disease is found in pineapple trees in irrigated land. Under the attack of this disease, the green leaves of the plant turn yellow-green and the tips of the leaves turn brown. Affected mid- leaves come off easily when pulled, and leaves have rotting spots at the base and a foul odor comes out.

Control measures:
  • (1) Land water drainage should be done properly.
  • (2) Buck seedlings should be treated with medicated water and planted.
  • (3) Two grams of captan or difolatan or 4 grams of copper oxy-chloride per liter of water is beneficial if sprayed on the plants at the beginning of the attack.

Fruit rot: C.O. Ceratostomella paradoxa:

The eyes of the fruit turn black due to the attack of this disease. Later the whole fruit rots.
Control measures:
  • (1) Fruits should not be covered with straw to protect them from sunlight.
  • (2) Three milliliters of Kuman-L or 1 gram of Bavistin per liter of water should be sprayed on the plants at the beginning of infection.
  • (3) Care should be taken not to injure the fruit while selecting and marketing the ripe fruit. Because the injured fruit rots quickly.

Leaf spot disease (Leaf Spot: C.O. Phytophthora Sp.):

Pineapple leaf spot disease is sometimes seen in wet weather. In the attack of this disease, small water-soaked spots are seen on the leaves. Later the spots become larger in size. The affected area gradually dries up.
Control measures:
  • (1) Land water drainage should be done properly.
  • (2) Seedlings should be treated with medicated water and planted.
  • (3) Two grams of captan or dipholatan or 4 grams of copper oxy-chloride per liter of water is beneficial if sprayed on the plants at the beginning of the attack.

PINEAPPLE PESTS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS

Mealy bug: The larvae are white in color. They live in groups on tree trunks, leaves and fruits and continuously absorb plant sap. Affected leaves are all leaves starting from the base
fall down The stem of the ground floor can also be attacked by aphids.

Control measures:
  • (1) Seedlings should be dipped in water mixed with methyl parathion such as Metacid 50%. Medicine should be mixed as half milliliter per liter of water.
  • (2) One milliliter of dimethoate such as Roger-30 E-C or Oxydemiton per liter of water. Methyl such as Metacystox should be sprayed on plants.
Nematode: Nematodes attack pineapple plants occasionally. The flowers of the affected plants bloom. As a result, the movement of tree sap is disturbed. The growth of the plant is disrupted and the tree does not bear fruit.
Control measures:
Similar to banana nematode suppression.
